I also have thick hair, and I have found that by pulling half of it back, I can make it look thinner.

Put and cool looking headband in it

Scrunch it

Straighten it

gather your hair like you would for semi-low ponytail then twist the hair and stick it in a clip.

get a curling iron and put it in loose curls
